FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What does the Toolkit measure?
The INTER-NDA toolkit measures neurocognitive (cognition, language, fine and gross motor, and positive and negative behaviour), vision (visual acuity and contrast sensitivity); auditory processing; and sleep (sleep efficiency, latency and fragmentation; circadian rhythm and daytime physical activity) outcomes.
How long does does the Toolkit take to administer?
The Toolkit takes 45 minutes to administer (vision = 5 minutes, the INTER-NDA = 15 minutes, cortical auditory processing = 15 minutes and sleep = 5 minutes).
Can the Toolkit/INTER-NDA be administered by non-clinicians and non-specialists?
Yes, the Toolkit has been designed so that non-clinicians can administer the Package to the same degree of protocol adherence and reliability as clinicians and specialist healthcare staff. Please click here for further details about data supporting this.
What is the age range that the Toolkit is suitable to be used for?
The INTER-NDA has been validated for use in children aged 22 to 30 months , but contains items suitable from 18 through to 36 months. The vision, cortical auditory processing and sleep tests are independent of age, and can be used across all age groups.
Can the Toolkit be used in all countries?
Yes, the Package was designed to be free from cultural biases and cultural customisation is an integral part of the training process.
How much does the Toolkit cost?
For non-commercial purposes, the Package does not have a fee per use. To find out about kit and training costs, please contact us.
How is the EEG data analysed?
The EEG data is analysed using a specially developed and validated signal processing pipeline.
How is the actigraphy data analysed?
The actigraphy data is analysed in two phases. In the pre-processing phase, the data is cleaned, checked for quality and selected using a standardised pre-processing protocol. In the processing phase, the selected data is processed in the Actiwatch software.
What is the INTER-NDA E-from?
The INTER-NDA E-form is a web based data collection form for the INTER-NDA. It contains integrated quality checks to prevent multiple entries and missing data and facilitates real time upload of data, and easy access of a ready-to-analyse data file (.csv) .
What are the product specifications required for the INTER-NDA E-form?
The E-Form can be used on any device (tablet, smartphone, PC) that is connected to the internet. It works on both iOS and Android operating systems. The best browser to run it on is Google Chrome.
Can the INTER-NDA E-form be used offline?
No, an internet connection is necessary.
Who provides the data server capacity for the INTER-NDA E-Form?
The data server capacity is provided by Google LLP via Google Forms.
What are the data and privacy considerations for the INTER-NDA E-Form?
As the INTER-NDA E-form is developed and run on a Google platform, its use is governed by the data, privacy, GDPR and terms of use of Google LLP. The T&C for the INTER-NDA E-form is available here.
What does the INTER-NDA measure?
The INTER-NDA measures cognition, language, fine and gross motor, positive behaviour, and negative behaviour.
How long does the INTER-NDA take to administer?
The INTER-NDA takes appoximately 15 minutes to administer.
What is the age range that the INTER-NDA was designed for?
The INTER-NDA was validated for use in the 22 to 30 months age group, but contains items from 18 through to 36 months.
Has the INTER-NDA been validated?
The INTER-NDA has been validated against the BSID-III at 24 months. Please see here for further details.
Is the INTER-NDA diagnostic of early developmental problems?
The INTER-NDA is a screening test, used to identify children at risk of developmental delay. It is not a diagnostic test.
Does the INTER-NDA score give a developmental age for the child?
The INTER-NDA does not give a developmental age for the child as it was designed to determine whether a child has achieved the developmental skills expected of a typically developing 2-year-old.
Can the INTER-NDA be used in all countries?
Yes, the INTER-NDA can be used anywhere, it was designed to be free from cultural biases.
Can the INTER-NDA be used in both high and low income settings?
Yes, the INTER-NDA can be used in both high and low income settings. It was designed to be free from the influence of culture and education on the child.
Can the INTER-NDA kit be sourced locally?
Yes, the INTER-NDA kit items can be sourced locally. Please contact us for a list of these items.
Can data be collected on paper forms?
Yes, if you do not wish to use the NeuroApp, you can collect data on paper forms. Please click here for copies of these or contact us.
What languages are the INTER-NDA available in?
The INTER-NDA is available in a number of languages. Please click here for translated versions of the INTER-NDA. If the translation you are looking for is not available on the link above, please contact us and we may be able to provide this to you or assist you with creating a standardized translation.
What is the difference between the Toolkit and the INTER-NDA?
The INTER-NDA toolkit refers to a group of 4 tests measuring neuropsychological outcomes, vision, cortical auditory processing and sleep in 2 year olds. It takes 45 minutes to administer. The test that measures neuropsychological outcomes, and which is one of the four parts of the toolkit, is called the INTER-NDA. It takes 15 minutes to administer and measures cognition, motor skills, language, and behaviour. The INTER-NDA is therefore a part of the Toolkit.
What is the INTER-NDA consortium?
The INTER-NDA consortium is a group of subscribers to the methodology and ideology of the INTER-NDA Package. The consortium dataset is a pooled, anonymised dataset of vision, INTER-NDA, EEG and sleep data from typically and non-typically developing children from various parts of the world.
How do I access consortium data?
Please contact the Oxford Maternal and Perinatal Health Institute to discuss data sharing requests.
How do I use the Package in my research project?
Please read our manuals and the description of the INTER-NDA methodology to ensure that the Package is suitable for your project. If you think it is, please contact us to arrange a training session.
How do I use the Toolkit/INTER-NDA in my clinic?
Please read our manuals and the description of the INTER-NDA methodology to ensure that the Toolkit is suitable for your clinic and for your patients. If you think it is, please contact us to arrange a training session.
What do mothers think about the Toolkit?
To date, in our experience, mothers find the tests very informative. They enjoy seeing their children complete the tasks.
How do children react to the Toolkit?
Children find the all aspects of the Toolkit entertaining. They are happy to complete the tasks which are organised into a play-based sequence. As the assessments are short, the children do not get tired or bored before completion. In our experience, most children are happy to co-operate if the vision tests are completed before the INTER-NDA as it is a relatively un-obstrusive test and can be used to build a rapport with the child. Some children do not like the EEG cap being placed on their head and try to remove this during the assessment: this contributes to a disruption of the experiment and poor signal quality.
is there a version of the INTER-NDA for younger children?
Yes, we have constructed and validated a tool to measure cognition, language, motor, and behaviour outcomes in children aged 10 - 14 month. This is called the Oxford Neurodevelopment Assessment (OX-NDA) and takes 20 minutes to administer. It has been evaluated against the BSID-III in Pelotas, Brazil. A description of the OX-NDA, its psychometric properties and norms is available here. Please contact us for further information including to use the OX-NDA in your clinical or research settings and/or to add yourself to the e-training workshop waitlist.
A newborn assessment (the Neonatal NeuroBehavioural Assessment, Neo-NBA) is currently in development by our team.
